The spirit of Thanksgiving

There really is a reason that I get so grumbly about the holidays. Thanksgiving week, and what is the prevailing theme? How much shopping we get to do the day after. I find it pretty hilarious that the people who are whining about not being able to pay their bills are all jumping up and down to get up at three am to buy a new big screen TV.
And I have to wonder if the person who abandoned their cat on our clinic's doorstep in the freezing cold dark of morning with nothing but a cardboard carrier to protect her will be enjoying their Thanksgiving tomorrow. And if they are planning to spend the money they will save on cat food on a new Ipod or a DVD player? I'm sorry if this sounds cold, but I look at my cats in their cozy little environment and can't imagine how badly it would rock their world if I just dumped them outside in a carrier. I know people are having hard times, and maybe they truly couldn't keep their pet- but there are tons of shelters and rescue groups in this area. What did they thinking dumping their cat would do? If we'd taken her to a shelter, or if she'd chewed out of the carrier and been hit by a car does it make the outcome any better since it wasn't technically the owner's intention? I don't think so.
And if you want the honest truth, yes there are a lot of people coming into the clinic complaining about the price of their pets medications and other care. These are also the people who wear brand new expensive clothes, drive brand new luxury cars and talk about their week-end trip the beach. For some reason, the people who have been layed off or are struggling financially seem to be more likely to want their pets taken care of. Just my observation....

***These observations are brought to you by one very disgruntled girl. Hopefully she will be over it by tomorrow...***
