Road Tripping, Dumpster Diving

While I was interviewing and roadtripping, Jon found this sitting by the dumpster. It is HUGE!!! He brought it inside to see if it could be fixed, and it turned out that it would overheat after a few minutes and shut off. After doing some kind of boy thing involving screwdrivers and new parts, he fixed the TV! So now we have a TV 4 times the size of our old one, and for free. Amazing!

My roadtrip for my interview turned very dramatic when Luna started to vomit. Rather spectacularly, I might add. And all over me right when I passed the last gas station for about 20 miles, meaning that I was vomit-soaked for quite awhile. Now, I'm used to being soaked in bodily fluids at work, but it was a little different (and shocking!) in my own car.

Well, when we got to my grandparents' house, she immediately started to run around with Spike (aka, cutest puppy EVER!). They played so hard that I was certain that she'd just been a little carsick. I attributed her decreased appetite to the same thing, since she did eventually finish her food.

When I woke up, I discovered that she had vomited multiple times overnight. One of the piles looked to be feces- I think Spike had pooped and she ate it and vomited. Grossness!!! Anyway, she was absolutely a limp noodle. She was hot and her mucous membranes were tacky. I held her for a bit, and she was just feeling awful. I was too worried to ride in a car like that for 3.5 hours, so I had to do the unthinkable. I took her to a vet that I did not know (granted, it was Spike's vet, but STILL!) and had to drop her off. For the DAY. When the doctor called me, he said that her fever was 103.8 (normal for a dog is usually ~100.0-102.0), mucous membranes were tacky and she was depressed. He wanted permission to run a CBC and place an IV catheter, which I agreed to of course. We agreed that she would be on fluids, antibiotics and anti-nausea meds for the day, and if she was still dehydrated he'd cap the catheter and let me restart fluids once I got home. I was extremely proud of my control-freak side- as much as I wanted to, I did not insist on going back there and placing the catheter myself.

After my interview (don't want to jinx anything, so I'll talk about it later!), I went to pick her up. She was still miserable, dehydrated, running snot out of her nose and droopy, though she was really happy to see me. She slept the whole way back, while I stressed out madly about getting her home and back on fluids. I am extremely thankful for the saintly doctors I work for, who let me call them at 10:30 at night once I got to the clinic and ran more blood work and advised me on meds to give. Her electrolytes were all low, but in normal range. Her WBC count had come down by 4,000 and her temp was down to 102.0. She's going to stay on fluids all night, and they'll take a look at her in the morning. As for me, I think I might go and sleep for a week!
