In 2007, the Breeder's Cup became a two day event, running newly introduced races the Friday before the big Saturday card. Luckily, I happened to be off on Friday and Saturday last year, and was able to watch the races- I don't expect to have this kind of luck in the future, and kind of hoped that there wouldn't be any more Friday cards. The other day, I saw the headline Breeders' Cup Friday card now all-female and groaned inwardly. If there is one day that I love as much as Derby Day, it is Breeder's Cup day. I plan for these days weeks, even months in advance. I pick my horses and follow them every step of the way as they prepare for the Big Day. On Breeder's Cup day, I wake up early and watch the pre-race coverage and download replays of key prep races. It is my day to completely indulge myself in horse racing and junk food, and I do my snarling monster impression for anyone who tries to interrupt. So, really a two day event could be a lot of fun for me.
But Friday? Really? Did anyone stop to consider that the majority of racing fans are members of the working class? I would love nothing more than to make a whole week-end out of Breeder's Cup, but I (along with millions of others) will have to work on Friday. Because if I don't go to work, I won't be able to pay for the apartment that holds the TV that has the cable that broadcasts the races. Sad, but true. The worst part is that they are moving some of my favorite races to Friday- the Juvenile Fillies, the Distaff... oh excuse me, the "Ladies' Classic," are being moved to Friday. So, what to do? Have I really reached the point in my craziness where I will have to work extra hours the weeks leading up to Breeder's Cup day so that I can afford to ask off for that Friday?
I guess we'll have to see.
