Survival Supplies

Predictably, everyone in town became hysterical today at the thought of yet another "winter storm." By 10am, school closures were announced and all of the little mom and pop stores shut down for the duration. To avoid the torrent of people calling the clinic screaming "ICE STORM!!!!!!! I CAN'T LEAVE THE HOUSE!!!! AHHHHHHH!" we moved all of our appointments up by a few hours so that people could get in before the storm started, and left the late afternoon open for anyone with a big enough emergency to brave the weather.

By the time the "wintry mix" started, I was wiped out and made a beeline for the convenience store for a caffeine fix. Once inside, I could barely move for all the people crammed inside, buckling down for the storm of the century. The checkout line was about a mile long, and as I impatiently hopped from foot to foot jiggling my Dr. Pepper, I began to amuse myself by checking out the must have items everyone was laden down with.

Two college-aged guys:
-One bright orange jug of de-icer.
-Four 24 packs of Budweiser.
-Twizzlers

Old man in blue flannel jacket:
-Two starter logs
-Bottled water
-One pint of vodka
-One pint of rum

Second older man, leather jacket:
-Five pound bag of rock salt.
-Thirteen boxes of wine (No, I am not kidding. YES, I actually counted!)

Young couple:
-Three cases of beer
-One bottle of wine
-Margarita mix
-Tequila
-Two boxes of cookies
-Box of popcorn
-Ice cream
(they, apparently, had no actual concerns about the weather.)

Woman in scrubs:
-Loaf of bread
-Starter log
-One case of beer
-Two boxes of wine.
-Bright blue windshield de-icer (what is the difference between the bright blue and bright orange de-icers????)
-Tons of chocolate bars

I think the pattern that I saw in these shoppers goes a long way to explain the maniac drivers in this city during inclement weather. I walked out of the store and collapsed in a fit of giggles.

Had you seen my cart you would have spied 6 jumbo cans of dog food (aka "gravy"), a 24 pack of cat food, milk, rice, pimento cheese, and a female beta fish.
don't ask...
